Alisher Navoi, whose real name is Nizomiddin Mir Alisher, was a great Uzbek poet known for his poems written in both the old Uzbek language under the pen-name Navoi and in Persian language under the pen-name Foni. He was born in Herat and lived most of his life there. His family had connections to Timurid's palace. Navoi's works were collected and compiled into a "devon" during 1464-65. He faced challenges and had to live away from Herat due to internal conflicts within Timurid's state.
