The history of the English language began with the invasion of three Germanic tribes - the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes - to Britain in the 5th century AD. The Celtic speakers in Britain were displaced by the invaders towards Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The Angles hailed from Englaland and their language, Englisc, gave rise to the words England and English.
