Gothic language was spoken by the Gothic tribes, a group of Old Germanic tribes. The origin of the Goths is uncertain, but there are stories of their migrations from Sweden to western Russia and eventually to the shores of the Black Sea. They later conquered the Roman Empire, with the Visigoths being the first to do so. After Alaric's reign, the Visigoths established a kingdom in Spain and southern Gaul, only to be defeated by the Franks in 507 and pushed beyond the Pyrenees.
