Kurash, translated as “attaining a goal by fair means,” is a traditional national waist belt fight among the Turkic peoples. It is officially included in the world’s network of non-Olympic sports and supported by UNESCO. Originating in Uzbekistan around 3,500 years ago, kurash is mentioned in the ancient legendary epos Alpomysh as one of the most popular and favorite kinds of single combat. Historian Herodotus described kurash in detail in his work “History,” among other customs and traditions of ancient Uzbekistan. Avicena believed that kurash was beneficial not only for the body but also for the spirit. Tamerlane introduced kurash to his fitness and self-protection program for the soldiers of his troops.
