Afrasiyab in Samarkand is the ancient core of the city and former capital of Sogdiana, a major Silk Road crossroads with murals and artifacts dating back to the 7th-8th centuries BCE. Destroyed by Genghis Khan in 1220, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001
