Host defenses are composed of two complementary, frequently interacting systems: innate (nonspecific) defenses protect against microorganisms in general, and acquired (specific) immunity protects against a particular microorganism. Innate defenses provide immediate protection against a variety of pathogens and foreign substances. Immunity includes all properties of the host that confer resistance to a specific infectious agent.
