Infection of incised skin or soft tissues is a common but potentially avoidable complication following a surgical procedure. Antibiotic prophylaxis is an adjunct to good surgical technique to reduce the incidence of surgical site infection, while causing minimal change to the patient's host defences and minimizing adverse effects. It also aims to minimize the effect of antibiotics on the patient's normal flora.
