Before the invention of the electronic calculator, people used a number of devices to help them with mathematical calculations. Humans used fingers and small piles of stones as aids to mental arithmetic. However, these methods were insufficient for larger calculations. The abacus, or counting frame, was a rudimentary version of a calculator that helped with counting in ancient times.
